Alpen Club ( German Club) – Mixed live music with a live trio 1 friday a month. Mr. Dance cd’s Sunday.

Austrian Club – More continental than the Alpen club. half of saturdays except gartenfests in summer.

Baci – Italian style restaurant, quite continental, small dance floor, Emedio and Carlo back april, 2015. Too busy Saturday. Friday and Sunday variable, inquire when making reservation. Packed 6 weeks for Christmas parties.

Bonsor – Seniors centre. Old time English dancing, one band, one laptop and vocals.

Crystal Ballroom – Studio – Large dance floor, good sound, International standard and latin syllabus. Strict tempo cd’s. Moving to Richmond.

Duello – Salsa and Argentine both use this swordsman’s facility monthly. Great venue.

Dancing for Dessert – Studio – Friday evening 90 minute open dance. Studio party tuesday.

Granville Island – Community centre, large multi-function room.

Kathy Bradley’s – Studio, medium size floor, same venue as urban beat, newcomers very welcome.

Kennedy hall – – great floor, – property of municipality of Surrey

Pepitas on Top – mexican restaurant with tapas options – fri-sat – vocalist/keyboard/laptop.

Polish Hall – Medium dance floor on main, smaller down; both rented for Tango, group course and dance simultaneously.

Royal Canadian Legions – Many branches, only some are shown on the website, use phone book as well.

Scandinavian Centre – Ethnic Cultural club – Scandinavian dancing – medium floor, NO air conditioning.

Scottish Cultural Centre – Medium or large dance floor, rented by Maggie Bretton.

St Mary’s Ukrainian Cultural Centre” find it on Maps.Google.ca. Argentine. Ballroom/latin.

Victoria Drive – Irish Caeli once a month

Impossible to keep current with all the dancing available in VancouveRRR. Musicians, Instructors, Providers, and especially Chefs come and go. Any venue can go condo between one week to the next. Always pre-field before going. And please if you see something which is obsolete, e-mail me Frank@Vanocuverrr.ca or FrankJ21@hotmail.com. Opinions differing from my Picks are also welcome. Not everyone has the same tastes, especially in decibels.

1 Unfortunately keeping websites up to date with current events is not so easy as we would wish. Many of the websites shown are not current as to which evenings the dancing is, which bands, which dances in the lessons. This does not necessarily indicate that the venue is any less active. It might simply be that the developer of the site, whether volunteer or commercial, has moved on to other things; or that the cost of modifying the HTML every month is simply not within the budget. HTML is not that easy for some of us to update, I’ve tried it, it’s really picky, and like most computer things 97% right won’t work.

2 The Vancouver Alpen Club is the venue for Mr. Dance (ex Astorino’s) almost all sundays. Euro Band maybe once a month…

i The Vancouver Alpen Club has the best dance floor in the City to my knowledge since the Commodore was downgraded. Large, sprung. There is a restaurant downstairs. It is the venue for Mr. Dance (ex Astorino’s) almost all sundays sept to june. Euro Band once a month… Oktoberfests for a few weeks. Other than that there is no open dancing. What an opportunity for some aspiring couple to open a dance studio. Everything is in place. Somebody think about it.

ii Backstage lounge at the Arts club. Atomic Radio aka Porto Swing aren’t there any more. Variety of entertainment, rarely with dancing..

iii Firefighters is an ultra high decibel venue on the west side of Bonzor street. Lot’s of people like it, packed on friday evening. This is the kind of place Frank shuns though. I deliberately omit it. Would not mention it here except that people do get konfoozed between it and the community centre on the opposite side of the street which is the absolute opposite extreme.

iv Kennedy Hall Sprung dance floor probably older than pattulo bridge but in very good shape. Free parking right at the door.

v OddFellows Hall on 8th avenue, floor width is 25 ft but chairs often cut it by a few feet. Maps.Google.ca finds OddFellows Hall on pender, which now operates as Dancey Ballroom., although that may change in 2017

vi Baci – September 2014 completely redone. Pastels and paintings. The Mediterranean scenery is gone. Same owner and staff. Emedio et al are back. Music was largely stand up and vibrate the last time I dropped by. Still a good evening though.

Bus 135 to downtown and north Burnaby, 130 to willingdon, brentwood on the millennium line, and metrotown on the Expo. Parking on the Burnaby side is generous, never on the Vancouver side.

vii Cheek to Cheek is duo who play once in a while at Flavours of Portugal and Executive Inn north road www.CheektoCheek.ca Website is obsolete, 2016 dates.

2 The Vancouver Alpen Club is the venue for Mr. Dance (ex Astorino’s) almost all sundays. Club dances suspended, probably some Saturdays in 2014 with Al on guitar and vocals, et al.

i

I’d appreciate anyone who knows the airconditioning situation, how it’s actually coping for dancing in 70F and 80F up to 29C daytime highs we’ve been having, at any of these venues which I’ve listed, sending me the specifics, actual daytime high, what equipment. I’ll update this table on www.VancouveRRR.ca dancing page – venues page for this summer. I hate saying anything negative about any venue, instructor, or dance promoter, but readers need to know the situation.

ii Arts Club Backstage Lounge. Has never been a problem until the two sundays when the daytime high was 80F or a bit more and high 20’s C. Some people who dance a lot, like Frank, would be going out to the deck to cool off frequently. Other people said that it was not a problem.

iii

Backstage lounge at the Arts club. Sundays, Atomic Swing promoter, Port O Swing teach a Basic east coast swing lesson at 7:00. Some very good bands at 8:00. 2 a month are 20’s 40’s swing music, similar to the liveliest music on channel 460 on shaw cable. Best to look at backstage or Atomic Swing’s website for the band’s name, then check them out on YouTube or with me.

Weekdays – Backstage’s website only says the time the doors open, (which is meaningless, they open around noon). Except for sunday, the music is seldom before 10:00, probably high decibel. When there is no music, the indoor bar is dark, empty, and unwelcoming. Contrast that to the beautiful Lux Lounge. Why they don’t do something to improve the decor is a mystery to me.

iv Austria Club – Gartenfest is outside, no problem.

v Baci – September 2014 completely redone. Pastels and paintings. The Mmediterannean scenery is gone. Same owner and staff. Same music, female vocalist and a fellow who plays the laptop. Very flexible music wise. Take a table and let them know what you like. One evening they played Somali music using a customer’s USB key.

Bus 135 to downtown and north Burnaby, 130 to willingdon, brentwood on the millenium line, and metrotown on the Expo. Parking on the Burnaby side is generous, not on the Vancouver side.

vi Firefighters is an ultra high decibel venue on the west side of Bonzor street. This is the kind of place I deliberately omit. Would not mention it here except that people do get konfoozed between it and the community centre.

vii Confederation. Evening when I was there, 3 dozen people, fans, no problem at all.

viii Harbour Dance Centre I was there for Kathy’s ballroom/latin evening, 3 dozen dancers, a couple of decent fans, no problem. Was there on a monday night for salsa, 60 people. These people get serious about temperature. They had an industrial fan blowing air up two flights of stairs through a one foot diameter hose. Gold Star for them.

ix Pepitas on Top. A/C needs fixing – evening when I was there, a few decent sized fans made it ok. Would be hot in the daytime.

x Scandinavian Stage events are outside but evening dancing is inside. Built for Norweigan climate. No ventilation whatever. On a warm night it is hot.

iv Slovenian Hall – There is also a smooth linoleum area adjacent to the dance floor, which is very useful as a practice space – Byron uses a Bose tower speaker fed from a laptop or two. The sound quality is excellent, the same throughout the room, never coming noticeably from one speaker. Y’ain’t got one, get one. Only a few grand.
